Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a way for your doctor to use a special magnifying device to look at your vulva, vagina, and cervix. If a problem is seen during colposcopy, a small sample of tissue (biopsy) may be taken from the cervix or from inside the opening of the cervix (endocervical canal). The sample is looked at under a microscope.

Endometrial Ablation

A procedure for treatment of dysfunctional or abnormal uterine bleeding, endometrial ablation uses either heat or cold energy to destroy the endometrial lining of the uterus — with the goal of reducing your menstrual flow. In some women, menstrual flow may stop completely. No incisions are needed for endometrial ablation. Your doctor inserts slender tools through your cervix — the passageway between your vagina and your uterus.

The tools vary, depending on the method used to destroy the endometrium. Some types of endometrial ablation use extreme cold, while other varieties depend on heated fluids, microwave energy or high-energy radiofrequencies.

This specialized procedure is performed by our expert Ob Gyn physicians in the office or a local surgi-center/out-patient hospital setting. If you are considering endometrial ablation, please contact one of our many practices offering this procedure. Our physicians are devoted to giving you compassionate, state-of-the-art treatment that meets your individualized needs.

Hysteroscopy (In Office)

Hysteroscopy is the visual examination of the canal of the cervix and interior of the uterus using a thin, lighted, flexible tube called a hysteroscope. The device is inserted through the vagina.

Hysteroscopy may be used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The hysteroscope allows for easy visual access to the interior of the cervix and uterus to assess the lining of these structures. Therapeutic maneuvers, such as taking a tissue sample (biopsy), removal of polyps or fibroid tumors, or preventing bleeding with cautery (destruction of tissue by electric current, freezing, heat, or chemicals) may be performed during a hysteroscopy procedure.

Leep Procedure

Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) uses a wire loop heated by electric current to remove cells and tissue as part of the diagnosis and treatment for abnormal or cancerous conditions in a woman’s lower genital tract.

The lower genital tract includes the cervix and vagina. The cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb) and the vagina connects the cervix and the vulva (the external genitalia).

With LEEP, an electric current passes through the fine wire loop to cut away a thin layer of abnormal tissue. This tissue will be sent to the lab for examination. LEEP can also remove abnormal cells to allow healthy tissue to grow.

Permanent Sterilization / Birth Control (In Office)

Hysteroscopic Sterilization is different from the traditional method of surgery called tubal ligation. There is no cutting into the body. Instead, your doctor inserts a thin scope through your body’s natural pathway of the vagina and into the uterus, where the openings to the fallopian tubes can be seen. Micro-inserts are placed into your fallopian tubes blocking them. Since most women only report mild cramps, you have the choice of having the procedure performed without general anesthesia. In fact, most women choose to have their procedure performed in the convenience of our office. Some women experience mild cramps afterwards and all return to their regular activities in less than a day. The doctors at Women’s Health Specialists were the first to perform Essure® in our community, and serve as instructors for other doctors desiring to learn this revolutionary office-based procedure.

Urodynamic Testing

Urodynamic tests for urinary incontinence are measurements taken to evaluate your bladder's function and efficiency. The actual tests done vary from person to person.

Some urodynamic tests are relatively simple and can be done in a doctor's office; other tests require expensive and sophisticated instruments to measure the amount of pressure experienced by the bladder and urethra.
