OBSTETRICS

Obstetrics
We offer a wide range of obstetrics services, from puberty and maternal care to senior care. Our mission is to help you maintain a high quality of life through best health practices, and our entire staff is dedicated to this goal.

High Risk Pregnancy

Perinatology is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology for pregnancies that are, or could be considered high-risk because of a problem experienced by either the mother or the fetus. Physicians who practice perinatology are also referred to as maternal-fetal medicine specialists and have acquired specialized education beyond their Ob Gyn training. The perinatology team typically consists of accredited ultrasonographers, nurses and genetic counselors. Referrals are made to our network of these specialists. We currently have one participating practice and are growing this service to meet our patient’s needs.

Long-Term Birth Control

If you are looking to move away from traditional daily or monthly birth controls, our knowledgeable physicians and clinicians are here to help you determine if a long-term birth control method is best for you. While all of our practices provide Intrauterine Device (IUD) insertion, only a few currently implant the contraceptive rod. This single-rod progestin implant provides up to three years of pregnancy prevention and is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. Our skilled physicians provide this service in the office or at an affiliated out-patient facility. Contact one of our participating practices to learn more.

Midwifery

Our certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are skilled health care professionals and registered nurses (RNs) who successfully completed an accredited graduate education program and passed a national certification exam. They perform routine gynecologic exams for women of all ages as well as provide all aspects of prenatal care. Many of our midwives provide full obstetric care including labor, delivery and post partum services in the hospital setting. They strive to help women have a natural birth experience. If interested in a midwifery approach to your labor and birth, we have eight exceptional Ob Gyn practices throughout Connecticut offering this option. All of our midwives are devoted to providing each mother-to-be with compassionate care and developing a birth plan to meet her individual needs.

Multiple Gestation

Multiple gestation, or multiple pregnancy, occurs when two or more fetuses are conceived at the same time in the same woman. It can be differentiated from the term "multiple births" because it refers to the conception of the fetuses, and may or may not result in the live births of multiple babies. In some cases, the woman’s body may naturally reduce the number of fetuses present, or a woman may decide to reduce the number due to the health risks associated with multiple gestation.

With multiple gestation, the fetuses are either monozygotic or dizygotic. Monozygotic means that, during conception, the sperm fertilizes one egg, which will later split into two or more developing embryos. These types of siblings are genetically identical and almost always the same sex.

Routine Care for Women

At any age, there are certain tests and exams — both expected and unexpected — that can help the doctor get the best picture of your health. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends the health assessments based on age. See our wellness page on Routine Care for more information.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an oscillating sound pressure wave with a frequency greater than the upper limit of the human hearing range. Ultrasound is thus not separated from 'normal' (audible) sound based on differences in physical properties, only the fact that humans cannot hear it.

Ultrasound is used in many different fields. Ultrasonic devices are used to detect objects and measure distances. Ultrasonic imaging (sonography) is used in both veterinary medicine and human medicine.
